The Kingdom of God is not of this world
Thursday Reflection
C.S. Lewis said, “Aim at Heaven and you will get Earth ‘thrown in’; aim at Earth and you will get neither.”
We’ve all experienced FOMO - the “fear of missing out”. We’ve all sat at a desk or in the break room, dreaming of a Caribbean island and a drink with a little umbrella in it. It’s hard to be fully present anywhere when you’re focused on what you might be missing out on.
For a lot of us, sin entices us by attacking our FOMO. It’s not that we don’t want to get to Heaven, it’s just that we’re not sure what that will require us to miss here on Earth.
So, we try to experience everything while we’re here. Doesn’t matter if it’s good for us or not. We don’t want to miss out on anything. The problem is, if we’re not careful, we’ll miss out on the greatest gift of all.
One solution is to keep our hearts focused on Heaven. Imagine that glorious moment when you enter His kingdom, because when you’re at the banquet table, when you see God in all of His glory, when you hear the choirs of angels singing, there is NOT A THING on Instagram that could make you jealous. There’s not a single thing your neighbor could buy that would fill you with envy.
If you live for Heaven, you will not want for anything. No one in Heaven is thinking, “Man, I missed out…”
So, the question remains… do we want Jesus to be an earthly King? Do we, as Christians, expect to be treated like royalty here on Earth? Do we want an Earthly inheritance, with which we can satisfy all the desires of our flesh?
Or, are we seeking the Kingdom of God, which is not of this world?
“Aim at Heaven and you will get Earth ‘thrown in’: aim at Earth and you will get neither.”
